Ukraine to Get Rid of Beryllium Containing Waste
OREANDA-NEWS. March 03, 2011. During 2011, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine jointly with the Kyiv City State Administration would cleanse the capital of beryllium containing waste. The transportation out of the country followed by burial of 111 containers it is scheduled to spend about 1.5 million USD.
Due to absence in Ukraine of safe and reliable techniques for destruction or disposal of hazardous dust, it is planned to be transported to a qualified funeral cemetery overseas.
Interest in Ukrainian beryllium has been shown by a Czech company KOMPRAFIN, which has experience in handling hazardous waste. In early March, its experts plan to hold tests at the State Scientific Production Enterprise "Zahid" (Kyiv), where from 1978 to 1991 metal-optical elements and structures were made using beryllium and where 111 containers with beryllium containing waste are now stored.
Only after receiving the results of test the solution would be taken to send or not the hazardous waste to the Czech Republic. In any case, this year the containers will leave the territory of Ukraine.
