OREANDA-NEWS. March 02, 2011. Western banks don’t show interest in Moldovan banks as they are concerned about problems at home and restoration of the pre-crisis potential, - Dorin Dragutanu. It was said by President of the National Bank of Moldova suggesting that foreign bank institutions will not be interested in investments into Moldova till the end of this crisis period.

Besides, according to him, the Moldovan market is very small and its growth potential is limited. Dorin Dragutanu said Moldova had been developing over the last seven years mostly thanks to consumption and money transfers from labor migrants. “Why should a foreign bank come here? To provide credits for stores?”, asked the National Bank Governor.

According to him, the situation may change though if investors see Moldova’s clear future, its direction to the European Union, export growth and openness in its relations with foreign partners. Dorin Dragutanu said such countries as Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria are becoming more and more expensive for western investors, so they will surely turn to the East. “Thereby, there is a question: will they turn to Ukraine through Moldova or will we create conditions for at least a part of investors to remain in Moldova?”, asked the National Bank President.
