OREANDA-NEWS. March 02, 2011. Lviv region develops shale gas production plans. The Head of Lviv Regional State Administration Myhailo Tsymbalyuk said in an interview to "Summary of the week" TV show on "First National".

In particular, he noted that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the production of shale gas project in the region. Recently the governments of Ukraine and the United States have signed in Washington a memorandum of cooperation in exploration.

Concerning Lviv region it is about the volume of 100 billion cubic meters, which are concentrated in 9 districts.

To run a large-scale production of shale gas the deputies of Lviv regional council must approve the corresponding program. Immediately after that, Lviv region can expect 100 million USD investment in geological research work which will last for 2-3 years.

Experience in neighbouring Poland indicates that the extraction of natural alternative gas, from the shale, can significantly reduce state dependence on foreign sources of gas supply. Statistics show that nearly 15 percent of world gas is currently received from shale.
