OREANDA-NEWS. February 16, 2011. The digging of one of the nine transport tunnels of the combined motorway and railroad Adler-Alpika-Service was completed in the vicinity of the Krasnaya Polyana village. The construction of the one-track railway tunnel of the fifth tunnel complex with a length of 2,910 meters and a diameter of 10.6 meters was carried out by means of a tunnel-boring complex. The machine was put into operation in April last year; it took the builders as little as 10 months to dig a tunnel of about three thousand meters in mountain working.
This is the first transport tunnel in the combined Olympic route construction sectors to be bored by shield tunneling method. Before that, the digging by means of tunnel-boring complexes was only completed at the service drainage galleries in the first and fifth tunnel complexes.

The combined motorway and railroad Adler-Alpika-Service project provides in total for the construction of six tunnel complexes with a total length of almost 27 kilometers, including 10.3 km of railway tunnels, 6.7 km of motorway tunnels, and 9.5 of galleries, as well as 35 kilometers of bridges and overpasses, 5 motorway interchanges with the existing roads. The facility is planned for commissioning in 2013. The combined motorway will ensure the transportation of the viewers and participants of the competitions to the mountain stadiums in Krasnaya Polyana and to the ice palaces of the Olympic Park in the Imeretinskaya Lowland. The railway capacity will be of up to 8.5 thousand passengers per hour, and that of the motorway will be of up to 11.5 thousand per hour.
