OREANDA-NEWS. January 28, 2011. UNDP project “Climate-risk management in Kazakhstan” launches an inception workshop. The main goal of this workshop is to inform key stakeholders on the projects start, present project’s goals, elaborate on the concept and annual work plan for bringing new ideas and enhancing the overall strategy.

Among the participants of the workshop are UNDP project team members, representatives from key ministries, Almaty local authorities, NGO’s, research institutes, international and national experts dealing with climate change and climate-risk management and other concerned parties. The workshop will gather around 40 participants.

Climate risk management – is a new initiative to be launched in five Central Asia countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The purpose of this multi-national program is to strengthen climate-related disaster risk reduction and adaptive capacity, promote early action and provide the foundation for long-term investment to increase resilience to climate-related impacts across the region.

Keeping up with the program’s main goal, each country is to identify its own focus depending on the country needs. Thus, the focus for Kazakhstan is to enhance resilience of rural communities in the Almaty region by improving water use efficiency in agriculture and climate related disaster risk management.

Key partners of the project are Ministry of Environment Protection, Water Resource Committee by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, GEF/SGP and others. The duration of the project is 3 years.
