According to the Primorsky Territory’s Fisheries Department, the largest volume of fish was handled at the port of Vladivostok – 1.5 million tons, over 78 000 and 38 500 tons were transshipped through the ports of Nakhodka and Zarubino, respectively. According to new regulation effective from 1 January 2009 all the fish caught by Russian vessels in the economic zone of the country should be declared at the ports of the Russian Federation. This is believed to help prevent illegal fishing and save biological resources in the fishing zones. In addition, it will contribute to the development of local fish processing facilities and saturation of the domestic fish market with quality products.
