OREANDA-NEWS. December 07, 2010. The 2018 Football World Championship will take place in Russia. This was the decision of the members of the Executive Committee of the International Football Federation as a result of secret voting that was held in Zurich.

The application of Russia got the most of votes and left behind England, Spain and Portugal, as well as Belgium and the Netherlands. Sochi was among the cities nominated in the Russia’s application.

The Central Stadium, which is now under construction in the Olympic Park, was designed subject to the possible participation of Russia at the contest for the 2018 World Championship. Therefore, the stadium was built function of the FIFA requirements to the world-class football games.

The FIFA commission visited Sochi in August 2010. The delegates examined the construction site of the Central Stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games would be held.

In addition, the list of the cities where the Mundial matches would take place, contained Moscow (Luzhniki, Dinamo, Spartak), the Moscow region, Saint-Petersburg, Kazan, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Volgograd, Saransk, and Yekaterinburg.
