IAEA Will Supply Uranium only to Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy
OREANDA-NEWS. November 13, 2010. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will supply low-enriched uranium only to the states which have placed their peaceful nuclear activities under the Agency safeguards
The information was provided by Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin.
“The material may be supplied to any non-nuclear weapons member state of IAEA which does not violate its NPT Safeguards Agreement and which has placed its peaceful nuclear activities under the IAEA safeguards” , Churkin specified.
“I think it’s very important for the Agency to expand its control capabilities particularly by approval of NPT Safeguards Agreement with IAEA and the supplementary protocol as a generally accepted standard for verification of fulfillment by the states of their nuclear non-proliferation obligations”, the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN said.
He mentioned that “signing — in accordance with the decision of the IAEA Board of Governors of November 2009 — an agreement between Russia and the Agency for establishment a guaranteed reserve of low enriched uranium in our territory under IAEA control that will help the countries faced interruptions in the supply of nuclear fuel for non-commercial reasons” was a breakthrough event in the formation of a new architecture of peaceful nuclear cooperation.
Churkin mentioned implementation of the Agency international project on innovative nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel cycle initiated by Russia as an example of successful international cooperation under the aegis of IAEA. Russia agreed to a long-term project financing in the period of 2008–2012 in the amount of 23 million rubles annually, the diplomat reminded.
