PM of Ukraine Comments Agreement on FTA with EU
OREANDA-NEWS. November 02, 2010. The agreement on free trade area between Ukraine and the EU should contain beneficial provisions for the Ukrainian manufacturer. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov stated in the "Exam for authority" at the First National Channel.
"we are required to do only one thing: to predict such conditions, which will be beneficial to our Ukrainian manufacturer. Once we assume that we reached a compromise, we will sign the agreement"- the PM said. But he added that during the last meeting, EU Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht said that the agreement on free trade area between Ukraine and the EU could be signed soon: "Today, when we shacked each other hand, Mr. de Gucht said that he firmly believes that in future such an agreement will be signed.
Mykola Azarov noted that despite the complexity of negotiations during the last round a significant progress has been made: "It is very difficult to negotiate because many meetings over the past years had practically no effect, what was stated by the EU. Only at the last meeting some progress was achieved. " He added that the next, 14th round of talks on free trade area is scheduled for early December.
PM said that Ukraine is interested in signing an agreement on FTA with the EU, because any market for our products important for our country, the more important is the EU market, which has 27 countries that have very significant industrial potential: "So to develop our economy sustainably, we need access to these markets. Access without restriction, without all sorts of discriminatory investigations and so on."
According to Mykola Azarov, at the moment there is a number of issues crucial for Ukraine, that require discussion. "For example, the European Union currently limits the use of our truck traffic on its road transport market. For them, this position is now critical, but it is critical for us too: we have 34 thousand truck transporters... So we will negotiate hard, patiently negotiating at all the levels, and we will defend our position".
Moreover, according to the Head of the Government, important is the question of export subsidies abandonment in bilateral trade and the mechanism for input prices for agricultural products abandonment.
