OREANDA-NEWS. President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers will be on a working visit to the People’s Republic of China from October 18-22, the aim being to strengthen co-operation between Latvia and China in the fields of business, education and culture.
 
While in China, the President will visit three cities. First, he will travel to Shenyang, where he will seek to promote links between Latvian universities and those in the Lianoning Province, as well as to take part in a Latvian-Shenyang Business Forum. On October 21, President Zatlers will be in Shanghai to open the Latvian National Day at the World Expo 2010 exhibition. He will also attend a Sino-Latvian Business Forum. At the conclusion of the visit, the President will visit Beijing for a meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jim Ping. He will attend a ceremony at which several bilateral partnership documents will be signed, he will tour the Huawei company, and he will meet with Latvians who live in Beijing.
 
While in Shenyang on October 19, President Zatlers will visit the Northeastern University and the Lianoning University, meet with leaders of the Communist Party from the province and the city, and also meeting with the governor of the province and the mayor of the city. The President will also tour the Shenyang Machine Tool Co., Ltd., company, which manufactures machinery.
 
On October 20, President Zatlers will address the Latvian-Shenyang Business Forum. After that, he will attend a ceremony at which a partnership memorandum will be signed by the Latvian city of Jelgava and the Chinese city of Huludao and by the Latvian Investment Development Agency and the Shenyang branch of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
 
Also while in Shenyang, President Zatlers will visit a gallery that has been established by a Latvian art curator, and he will also tour the city’s old town.
 
On the morning of October 21, the President will open the Latvian-Chinese Business Forum in Shanghai and attend the opening of a contact exchange. The event will involve approximately 20 companies from Latvia. From there, the President will travel to the international World Expo 2010 exhibition to attend the flag-raising ceremony of Latvia’s National Day at the event. A new Chinese-Latvian dictionary will be presented to guests and representatives of the Chinese media at the Latvian pavilion. The President and his delegation will also meet with representatives of China’s official delegation at the Expo. While at the event, President Zatlers will tour the pavilions of several other countries, and together with the economics minister and the culture minister, he will take part in a Skype-based video press conference for representatives of the Latvian news media.
 
In the evening, President Zatlers will attend a performance by the Latvian pianist Vestards Simkus at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre. He will also attend a reception organised by Latvia’s official representative to the international World Expo 2010 exhibition.
 
On the last day of his visit, October 22, President Zatlers will visit the Chinese capital city of Beijing, where he will meet with Vice President Xi Jim Ping. Several bilateral documents will be signed, including an agreement on the mutual recognition of documents of higher education, a memorandum on collaboration in the field of culture, and an agreement between the Latvian Mortgage Bank and the Chinese Development Bank. President Zatlers will also tour the Huawei company and meet with representatives of the Latvian community in Beijing.
