Prices for Bread in Moldova Stabilized
OREANDA-NEWS. September 29, 2010. Heads of bread-baking plants from Causeni and Stefan Voda informed Prime Minister Vladimir Filat on the reduction of prices for bread, noting that it became possible after the receipt of food wheat from the state reserve. Representatives of Balti bread-baking complex promised that from the beginning of this week the price for their bread would return to the former level as well.
Premier has discussed with authorities of bread-baking enterprises the prices for social bread and the efficiency of measures taken by the government in order to support the producers of bread in Moldova. They spoke about the subsidy assistance to the agriculture and about the efficient ways of distribution of this assistance.
Vladimir Filat noted the importance of support for producers and provision of consumers with qualitative products at the reasonable prices, emphasizing that the authorities were using all the opportunities, proposed by the law. Last week the government of Moldova decided to allocate 15 thousand tons of food wheat (1/4 of the total volume of state reserve) to the bread-baking enterprises in order to avoid the growth of prices for bread and bakery products and reduce them.
The bread-baking enterprises of Moldova must return the wheat to the state reserve before September 1, 2011. The wheat received must be used only for baking of bread and bread-products and provision of population with them at the reasonable prices. In 2010 the harvest of wheat in Moldova (without Transdniestria) amounted to near 780 thousand tons. In particular, 300 thousand tons of grain relates to food wheat with high content of gluten that is important for bread-baking, and the rest of grain – is fodder. Every year Moldova consumes about 340 thousand tons of wheat.
