OREANDA-NEWS. September 20, 2010. Last week RIAR (Research Institute of Atomic Reactors) was visited by the representatives of American TerraPower (an affiliated company of Bill Gates, Microsoft).

TerraPower offers RIAR to carry out radiation treatment and postreactor study of constructional materials and fuel samples to use them later in the new fast neutron wave reactor with primary sodium (Traveling Wave Reactor).

The USA projects to have such reactor constructed by 2020. In the course of the meeting TerraPower representatives presented the reactor concept as well as the basic requirements to its materials and fuel. In the course of negotiations proposals concerning several years of radiation treatment and post reactor study of materials and fuel pins samples provided by the American colleagues were also discussed.

Agreement was reached to continue exchange of information necessary for preparation of specification requirements, development of the experiment program and job estimate. The final agreement on these issues is to be reached at the meeting in November this year.
