IFAD to Grant USD20 mn for Development of Agriculture in Moldova
OREANDA-NEWS. September 15, 2010. This was announced by President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Kanayo Nwanze in the telephone conversation with acting President of Moldova, chairman of the parliament Mihai Ghimpu. Kanayo Nwanze noted it was also planned to provide Moldova with subventions from some European countries in total amount of near USD10 million for implementation of several projects on revival of agriculture.
The final decision on this issue will be taken in early October 2010 at the meeting of IFAD Assessment Committee. The IFAD President also added he would soon visit New York to discuss with foreign donors the possibility of USD30 million grant to Moldova to restore the agriculture. According to him, the improvement of food supply, increase of quality of agricultural products and increase of income in rural area are the important prerequisites for economic modernization of Moldova and achievement of European Integration.
He confirmed the intention of Moldavian authorities to support the IFAD principles and values on eradication of rural poverty by means of implementing the democratic reforms, including the effective policy of agriculture development. Earlier, in the course of visit to Rome, Mihai Ghimpu solicited the IFAD for allotment of monetary funds to support the agricultural landowners. The International Fund for Agricultural Development is a United Nations specialized agency, dedicated to the eradication of rural hunger and poverty in the developing countries. Moldova joined IFAD in 1996.
