Turkmenistan and EU Expand Traditional Contacts
OREANDA-NEWS. September 08, 2010. A meeting with Brian Morgan, Regional Coordinator of Coordinator of EU-Central Asia monitoring programmes, who was on a working visit to Ashgabat, was held at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
During the meeting the guest was briefed on the activities of the national Parliament and its role in ongoing democratic reforms initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and providing for intensification of cooperation on human rights with the authoritative international organisations, including the EU. Evaluating highly fruitful contacts established between Turkmenistan and the European Union, the meeting participants called for further expanding traditional partnership and discussed the aspects of implementation of the project of the European Commission, the UN Development Programme and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights “Strengthening the National Capacity of Turkmenistan to Promote and Protect Human Rights" launched in October 2009.
The key aspects of project implementation were discussed during the meetings held by Regional Coordinator Brian Morgan at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan. As is known, the three-year project provides for conducting the activities aimed at fostering a constructive dialogue with international organisations to further improve the socio-legal system in the field of human rights and organizing thematic international forums, workshops, study tours.
The prospects for enhancing collaboration under this project were the focus of an exchange of views that took place during the meetings held by the EU representative at the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Economy and Development and the Ministry of Justice.
The meetings at the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Ministry of Education, and the National Centre of Trade Unions are scheduled during the visit to Ashgabat.
