Klaipeda Port Observes Cargo Handling at Eastern Baltic Seaports
OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2010. During seven month of this year the cargo handling in Klaipeda Port increased by 13,4 percent. The turnover of dry/bulk cargo increased by more than the third part, the turnover of general cargo, particularly ro – ro cargo, with consumer goods making the major part, increased as well, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.
Klaipeda Port maintains the leader‘s position among the Baltic Ports. Klaipeda is still ahead of the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils – during the period from January to July Klaipeda Port cargo handling exceeded the cargo handling overturn of the mentioned ports in terms of cargo turnover. Cargo handling turnover in Klaipeda Port was lower than in a joint Tallinn Port.
Totally 17,4 million tons of maritime cargo were handled in Klaipeda Port in January – June of2010,i.e. more by 13,4 percent than during the corresponding of 2009. Such result was determined by increased handling volumes of natural and chemical fertilizers ( +1 447,9 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+637,8 thousand tons), containerised cargo (+447,9 thousand tons), minerals and construction materials (+166,6 thousand tons).
According to cargo groups the handling of dry and bulk cargo increased most of all (34,1 percent); altogether 6 587,4 thousand tons (37,7 percent from the total cargo handling of the Port) were handled. The handling of general cargo jumped up by 28,5 percent, the cargo volume of this group was 5 416,1 thousand tons (31,0 percent.). The handling of liquid cargo dropped down by 13,0 percent, in total 5 444,9 thousand tons (31,2 proc.) were handled.
Klaipeda port is enhancing the index of containerised cargo handling. During the period of January – July of this year 164 235 TEU of containerised cargo, i.e. more by 13,8 percent comparingwith the same period of the last year, were handled.
3622 ships called Klaipeda Port In January – July of 2010, i.e. less by 13,0 percent or by 539 ships comparing with the same period of the last year. 188,6 thousand passengers, i.e. more by 17,7 percent than during the corresponding period of 2009, visited Klaipeda during the analysed period.
