Russia and RSA Signed an Agreement for Uranium Supply
OREANDA-NEWS. August 12, 2010. In accordance with the results of negotiations in the Kremlin, the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and President of the Republic of South Africa Jacob Zuma have signed several trade and economical agreements.
In particular, according to the Kremlin press service information Russian Tekhsnabexport OJSC and South African ESCOM Holdings Ltd concluded a contract for supply of enriched uranium products.
The term of the contract is 10 years. The supplies will be commenced in 2001. This Agreement will have made it possible for Russia to occupy 45% of the South African low-enriched uranium market by 2018.
“Our market share in the South Africa will expand”, Head of Rosatom State Corporation Sergey Kirineko announced to the journalists in the Kremlin and added that Russia was also ready to construct an NPP in RSA according to its own technology.
According to the World Nuclear Association data, since the 1980s energy consumption in RSA has grown rapidly. Situated north of Capetown, Koeberg NPP generates about 5.3% of electric power consumed in the country. The aggregate capacity of the two Koeberg NPP reactors is 1,800 mW.
According to the estimates of Eskom state-owned power utility providing about 95% of electric power consumed in RSA, by 2025 the country will have needed to produce 40 GW to satisfy its electricity needs. In 2006 the country administration announced the plan of a new NPP but later the partner selection was suspended because of financial difficulties.
