OREANDA-NEWS. July 23, 2010. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Jan Kubis, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), who had arrived in the Turkmen capital to participate in the high-level regional meeting on water resources in Central Asia.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity of a personal meeting the high-ranking representative of the authoritative international organisations conveyed the hearty greetings of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who had addressed profound gratitude for heartfelt welcome and hospitality extended during his visit to Ashgabat.

Thanking for the kind words, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed the best wishes to the head of the United Nations Organization noting that he had the warm recollections about the personal meeting with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that had offered a powerful impetus to foster long-term partnership.

Focusing with satisfaction on the high dynamics of the fruitful dialogue established in the past years, the President and his guest exchanged views on the ways to intensify traditional cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN agencies including the Economic Commission for Europe. Emphasizing that Turkmenistan attached special significance to partnership with the United Nations and built it on a long-term, equal basis, the leader of the Turkmen state reaffirmed that Turkmenistan remained committed to expanding and deepening partnership through launching new joint projects and programmes in various fields.

Thanking Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for such a constructive approach, Jan Kubis underscore keen interest of the global community in fundamental changes taking place in Turkmenistan and the Turkmen leader’s important international initiatives aimed at addressing challenges of the modern world. This was vividly illustrated by the prudent and extremely balanced approach taken by Turkmenistan to addressing urgent problems facing the region today such as efficient water resource management. In this regard the guest focused on the important role of the meeting being held in the Turkmen capital with the participation of the delegations of the international organisations and the Central Asian states in facilitating cooperation of the Central Asian states on water resources management.

Wishing the fruitful work to the important regional forum, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed belief that Turkmenistan’s willingness to develop a wide international dialogue as well as large-scale social and economic reforms launched in the country would open up new opportunities for implementing the available potential in full and lay the reliable foundation for further fruitful cooperation in mutual interests.

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Ambassador Miroslav Jenca attended the meeting.
