OREANDA-NEWS. July 15, 2010. “The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation considers construction of a nuclear power plant in Seversk, Tomsk region inexpedient until 2020”, Head of the Department for Communication with Regions of Rosatom State Corporation Igor Konyshev announced on Wednesday.

Initially the first unit of the plant had been subject to commissioning in 2015, the second — in 2017. The recession introduced its corrections: in 2009 a decision was reached to suspend the construction at least for a year.

Seversk nuclear power plant is to be erected 32 km northward from Tomsk within Seversk restricted administrative and territorial entity on the area of about 80 ha where two power units with the VVER-1150 reactors and estimated electric capacity of 2.3 thousand mW will be located. Besides, the plant generates 300 mW of energy. “At the stage of the master plan correction concerning location of generating capacities Seversk NPP site itself remained in the plan”, Konyshev said to the journalists.

According to his version, the total power generation requirement has significantly reduced that is why at the moment it is inexpedient to invest money in its construction. He emphasized that Seversk NPP construction start-up time is to be determined by the Ministry of Energy. And in the opinion of the specified Ministry specialists, “the nuclear power plant in Seversk should appear somewhen about 2020”.
