OREANDA-NEWS. June 25, 2010. Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the offsite session of the International Symposium Nanostuctures: Physics and Technology. The symposium is held for the 18th time since 1993 by St.Petersburg Academic University — Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. More than 250 first-rate foreign and Russian physicistsand specialists in the sphere of nanotechnologies came to Petrozavodsk. The symposium co-chairmen were Nobel Prize Laureates: Zhores Alfyorov, academic, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Leo Esaki, professor, Japanese physicist.

Head of the Republic of Karelia Sergey Katanandov and President of Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Titov have taken part in opening of the session. Before its beginning Zhores Alfyorov and Sergey Katanandov had a meeting where they discussed prospects of development and application of advanced scientific technologies in Karelia. Opening the session, Zhores Alfyorov has rated high hospitality of Karelia and attention paid in the republic to nanotechnologies.

— I am very glad that we hold our scientific meeting here, in Petrozavodsk, — he said, — In Karelia the most serious consideration is paid to development of scientific research, to support of science and education. It is not the first time when we meet with the Head of the republic Sergey Katanandov, and it has always been a pleasure for me that he realizes perfectly the meaning of scientific research and scientific centers for developpment of productive forces and the whole society.

Head of Karelia cordially welcomed the meeting participants:

— It is a great honor for us to receive a scientific delegation so representative in our republic, — Sergey Katanandov said. — Today in Russia great importance is attached to scientific knowledge and development of nanotechnologies of which just a dozen years ago very few people knew. In Karelia we know about them and position the republic as the land of modern people and modern technologies. It occurs thanks to the Karelian Research Center and Petrozavodsk State University, Karelian scientists. I am sure that today's session held in Petrozavodsk will increase our opportunities and energy on this way.

During the session in Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences participants of the symposium discussed the most urgent issues of theoretical and applied researches in the field of physics of nanostructures, as well as their application in laser and optoelectronic industries. Also within the scope of the event in Petrozavodsk it is planned to have a number of meetings of participants of the symposium with Karelian scientists.
