Ukraine and EBRD Discussed Further Cooperation
OREANDA-NEWS. April 27, 2010. President Viktor Yanukovych met with President of the EBRD Thomas Mirow.
At the meeting Viktor Yanukovych said that today is a very important and moving day for Ukraine and all of its citizens - the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. He informed Thomas Mirow on the process of decommissioning the Chernobyl NPP and construction of the Shelter, stressing the importance of participation of the EBRD in these projects.
"I think that our cooperation will us the opportunity to work out a plan of rehabilitation of the Chernobyl NPP facilities in full," said Viktor Yanukovych.
The President also announced Ukraine's intention to hold a summit of donor countries in 2011, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy.
"While being in Washington at the Nuclear Security Summit, I spoke about my intentions for 2011 and invited the Presidents of donor countries to participate in our initiative," he said inviting Thomas Mirow to join the working group on preparation of the summit.
Viktor Yanukovych also drew attention of Thomas Mirow to the fact that there is a lack of funds in development of the Shelter Project.
"Now we see that the funds we had foreseen for this program are not enough. We need about 400 million Euros," said Viktor Yanukovych, adding that, of course, Ukraine will conduct strict examination of these projects, andthe Cabinet has already prepared a first proposal to increase funding by USD54 million.
"In the coming days the proposal will be considered," he said.
The President invited the EBRD to invest in other public projects in Ukraine too, adding that sides already have considerable positive experience in this area.
Viktor Yanukovych noted that there are another five projects being elaborated in Ukraine totaling over one billion Euros, and discussed with Thomas Mirow the terms of cooperation in the context of implementation of these projects.
