Cargo Plane Made Emergency Landing near Ulemiste Water Treatment Plant
OREANDA-NEWS. March 22,
AS Tallinna Vesi staff have visited the site with Rescue Board officials. The situation at the site is managed by the Rescue Board. We believe that there were no casualties among the crew and passengers of the aircraft, just minor injuries.
AS Tallinna Vesi regards this as a potential pollution incident. There is fuel leaking from the plane onto the ice surface of the lake, but the Company has installed absorbent mats and booms to limit possible effects. There are collection baths underneath the leakages to prevent the fuel from polluting the ice.
AS Tallinna Vesi’s primary concern at the moment is to remove the fuel from the aircraft. For this the Rescue Board has cleared the road to allow access to as close to the aircraft as possible, allowing the fuel to be pumped out of the tanks of the aircraft. We believe that there will not be additional pollution caused by this. According to the Rescue Board the plane’s cargo did not contain subtances harmful to the quality of water.
We believe that the water from the accident site is likely to reach the water treatment plant in about a month’s time.
Short-term strategy to ensure water quality:
We have significantly increased the monitoring of raw water quality. In case problems are detected, water from lower layers will be used.
Long-term strategy to ensure water quality:
We have ordered the necessary chemicals (active coal) that can be used for additional treatment of water, in case it is deemed to be necessary. We will continue to monitor water quality. The situation regarding water quality is under control at the moment.
There are no problems with water quality at the moment and we believe that there will not be any problems with water quailty.
