OREANDA-NEWS. March 4, 2010. UTair Aviation CEO Andrei Martirosov has officially assigned one of the fleet’s Tupolev Tu-154M aircraft to bear the name of the famous statesman and Tyumen native hero Boris Evdokimovich Sherbina.

Sherbina headed the Tyumen regional party committee form 1961 to 1973. In 1973 he was appointed minister for the development of regional oil and gas enterprises. In January 1984 he was appointed deputy head of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1986 Sherbina lead the state efforts for the clean up of the Chernobyl disaster.

Boris Sherbina made significant contributions to the creation of Russia’s oil and gas sector and the development of civil aviation in Western Siberia. Under Sherbina’s direct supervision, the major gas and oil exploration projects in the Tyumen region in the 1960’s and -70’s led to the development of oil and gas deposits that unleashed a new era of economic growth in Tyumen. The period also witnessed a new era of civil aviation in the region as aircraft enterprises were created alongside the introduction of new aircraft types. As the volume of passenger and cargo operations grew, scores of airports and runways were built.

The appellation was placed alongside aircraft registration № RA-85788 on the Russian civil aircraft registery.
