OREANDA-NEWS. February 02, 2010. The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS Russia) intends to indentify the causes and grounds for introducing the ban for fishing certain types of crabs in the West-Kamchatka sub-zone in 2010, reported the press-centre of FAS Russia.

FAS Russia received a petition from fishery managers regarding the ban for catching certain types of crabs in the West-Kamchatka sub-zone in 2010, introduced by the Federal Fishery Agency (Rosrybolovstvo).

The ban was also in force in 2009; however, in September 2009 Rosrybolovstvo decided that it would not be efficient to prolong the ban and set total allowable catches for the above types of crabs and allocated quotas for catching crabs.

Under the law on fishing and preserving water biological resources, the authorities can introduce fishing bans in certain areas with regard to particular water biological resources in order to ensure and preservation of water biological resources and their rational use.

At the same time, according to Rachik Petrosyan, the Head of the FAS Russia's Department for Control over Housing & Public Utilities, Construction and Natural Resources, controversial actions of Rosrybolovstvo for abolishing and introducing the ban for catching particular types of crabs can prevent economic activities of market participants involved in crabbing.
