OREANDA-NEWS. January 28, 2010. Belarus, Russia and Latvia signed an agreement on the tri-junction point of their land boundaries in Minsk on 28 January.

The document was signed by Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus Igor Rachkovsky, Ints Umpacis, Ambassador at Large of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, and Alexei Obukhov, Ambassador of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“The agreement finalized the demarcation of the Belarusian-Latvian border. Now we can get down to the delimitation of border between Belarus and Russia,” said Igor Rachkovsky after signing the agreement.

The tri-junction point of Belarus, Russia and Latvia is located at the confluence of the Neveritsa and Sinyukha (Zilupe) rivers. Each of the three states will erect a symbolic sign on their territory.

Alexei Obukhov, in turn, said that the signing of the agreement is a technically modest but important step. It will help continue the mapping of the Belarusian-Russian boundary and define its geographical coordinates more precisely. It will also become the first step towards the demarcation of the boundary between Russia and Latvia.

When asked about the reduction of visa costs for Belarusians, Ints Umpacis said that this issue is regularly raised and discussed. But it will take more time to reach concrete results. “The result will be achieved, but I can not tell you when,” said Ints Umpacis.
