OREANDA-NEWS. January 21, 2010. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih was named Environment Protection Leader 2009 within the framework of the national project “Ecology, environment and nature management Ukraine”. The company has been awarded this title for consistent introducing modern environmentally friendly technologies and equipment. In 2009 the impact of production activity on environment has been significantly decreased. During 9 months of 2009 the volume of total emission was reduced by 31,6%, the volume of placing the basic waste was reduced by 53,14%, the volume of effluent discharge was reduced by 58,4% compared to the same period of 2008.

Reaching such results was made possible by introducing environment protection measures – such as reconstruction of the desulfurization shop with vacuum-carbonate coke oven gas two-stage hydrogen sulfide cleaning up to 0,5% g/m2, capital reconstruction of the BF-8, including capital reconstruction of the aspiration installations of the cast houses and installation of the modern electrostatic precipitators as well as other measures. ArclelorMittal Kryvyi Rih consistently continued replacing out-dated inefficient technologies with the modern purification equipment.

Despite the on-going financial crisis and some decline in production volume, the company continued implemented planned environmental projects according to its commitment. In 2009 reconstruction of gas purifiers of the foundry-forging production was implemented, modern high-performing bag filters were installed on the gas purifiers of all the electric arc steelmaking furnaces. The company also continued it program of tailing dumps reconstruction. The expected positive impact of these measures will significantly improve the environment situation in Kryvyi Rih.

Upon receiving the award from the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Viktoria Shapoval, Director on environment protection, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Liana Maksimenko noted that sustainable development and growth is among top priorities in our company’s strategy and we will follow this strategy in the future”.

National “Ecology, environment and nature management in Ukraine” is implemented annually as a joint initiative of the Ministry of environmental protection of Ukraine and the Prestige MediaInfo publishing house.
