Throughput of Port of Tallinn in January-December 2009 Grew by 8,6%
OREANDA-NEWS. January 11, 2010. Freight turnover at the Port of Tallinn (Estonia) in January-December 2009 increased by 8,6% compared with the same period last year - up to 31 million 597 thousand tons, the port authorities said. As to containers turnover in this period it is reported to have decreased by 28% compared with the same period last year - to 131 thousand 59 TEU.
The volumes of general cargo handled in January-December 2009 declined by 51% - to 281 tones, while transshipment of dry cargo grew by 48% - up to 4 million 419 thousand tons. Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo in the twelve months of 2009 was up 12% - to 22 million 996.3 thousand tons. Transshipment of ro-ro cargoes fell 24% - down to 2 million 663.8 thousand tons. Number of ships calls totaled 7239 units (a 21% reduction in comparison with the same period last year), the PT report reads.
The Port of Tallinn is the third of the top largest ports of the Baltic Sea including St. Petersburg and Primorsk. The Port of Tallinn consists of five ports or so-called port zones: Muuga, Old City Harbor, Paljassaare, Paldiski South and Saaremaa. Tallinn port’s throughput in 2008 reportedly amounted to 29 million 77 thousand.
