SCM Group Businesses Lead CSR in Ukraine
OREANDA-NEWS. December 31, 2009. The First National CSR Business Case Contest awarded its winners on in
Four SCM Group companies won the contest in different categories: CSR practices of the Group were recognized as the best in three out of the six nominations.
In particular, System Capital Management managing company won the nomination for CSR Communications, Social Reporting. SCM is the first Ukrainian holding company that produced a sustainability report according to the international standards.
SCM Group power-generating holding DTEK won Development of Local Community nomination for implementing a social partnership programme in the regions of its operations.
Azovstal Steel Plant (part of Metinvest) won the nomination for Labour relations for the School-University-plant programme aimed at training specialists for the plant.
Ingulets GOK (also part of Metinvest Group) took the second place in the contest for creation of landscape reserve in place of abandoned mines.
The ceremony also presented a collection of social responsibility practices conducted by Ukrainian businesses, which comprised 43 case studies. Along with four SCM practices mentioned above, the collection also included cases of two other Group companies. The first project for doing a major reconstruction in Damanskiy residential area in Krivoy Rog was implemented by SevGOK. The second one implemented by Krasnodonugol recovers coalmine methane with the use of Kyoto Protocol mechanisms (both enterprises belong to Metinvest).
Alexandra Zayrnaya, SCM CSR manager, commented on the contest results: "Frankly speaking, our victory in the nomination for CSR Communications was not a surprise as we are indeed pioneers in CSR in the Ukrainian market. What's more important is that the practices of five SCM Group companies were included in the case study collection and recognized by international experts. In fact, since 2006 we've been working to make social responsibility one of business principles at all levels of SCM Group corporate structure".
