OREANDA-NEWS. December 04, 2009. Russian Railways (RZD) has begun paying compensation to those injured and the families of those who died in the disaster involving Nevsky Express train No. 166, reported the press-centre of RZD.

RZD President Vladimir Yakunin announced that the company would pay compensation of 200 000 rubles to each person injured in the incident, and 500 000 rubles the families of each person killed.

RZD expresses its gratitude to all railway personnel who contributed to the rescue of passengers on the Nevsky Express, and who showed true heroism, bravery and strength amid difficult circumstances.

The train personnel on the Nevsky Express, which was hit by a bomb attack on Friday evening on the border between the Novgorod and Tver regions, showed their high level of professionalism and dedication in aiding the injured passengers. Before medics and rescuers had arrived, train staff worked despite their injuries to help passengers. The staff carried the injured out of the train and bandaged their wounds.

Russian Railways expresses its gratitude to all railway personnel and passengers on the Nevsky Express who heroically contributed to the rescue efforts.

On 2 December, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin, in the presence of the company management, presented veteran railway worker Yelena Golubeva with an Honoured Railway Worker award for her major contribution to helping those injured in the Nevsky Express train No. 166 disaster. On the RZD president’s decision, Ms Golubeva was also awarded a lifelong pension.

The injured passengers were carried from the train to Yelena Mikhailovna Golubeva’s house, located nearby, and despite her advanced age of 79, she did all in her power to help.

Vladimir Yakuin said: "I consider Yelena Mikhailovna’s actions to be a courageous achievement. You are a heroic and kind-hearted woman. I believe this is an example on which our young people should be brought up. On behalf of all rail workers, thank you for helping the passengers".
