OREANDA-NEWS. December 01, 2009. A meeting on the construction of confined disposal facility was organized at Port Authority, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.

Port Authority is liable for solution of problems related with dredging, treatment, storage and further usage of contaminated sediments from Port territory waters. Therefore it is planned to construct a specialized confined disposal facility on the coast of Curonian Lagoon.

In order to solve the problem of contaminated sediment treatment the Port authorities alongside with the construction of temporary confined disposal facility considered another optional possibility, i.e. either to select another area for sediment storage and the primary sediment treatment or to constantly deposit these sediments constructing a specialized contaminated soil dump fill.

Therefore a meeting of specialists from diverse fields was organized in the premises of Port Authority on the 26th of November. The goal of this meeting was to analyse the provisions of legislation in force and to consider practical possibilities to transport to other territories contaminated sediments that had accumulated in Klaipeda Port, to process and to store them.

During the meeting with participation of representatives from Environment Protection Department of Klaipeda region, the company „Toksika“, Klaipeda Region Waste Management Centre and the Baltic Coast environment research and planning institutes information on the legal possibilities for Port Authority to execute direct transportation of contaminated sediments to present sites and dump fills, in such a way avoiding the construction of a temporary confined disposal facility. During the meeting another possibility was under discussion – construction of new specialized sites and dump fills, storing and processing there contaminated sediments dredged from Port waters.

The problem relevant both to SC „Vakaru Shipyard“ and to total region of Western Lithuania was considered at the meeting. Therefore a decision to continue works that had been earlier started was taken. As it is known, the verified detailed plan of Smeltes Peninsula anticipates the construction of confined disposal facility in the territory of the old Boat Pier and the territory covering 2-3 hectares may be designated for temporary storage in this place. The winner of this tender will have to propose technology assuring that the affluent water should be prevented from contamination with heavy metals and the treated soil should remain clean to such an extent that it might be used for the construction of infrastructure objects.
