OREANDA-NEWS. November 17, 2009. The session of the Uzbek-Latvian intergovernmental commission for economic, industrial, scientific and technical cooperation was held in Tashkent, reported the Official website gov.uz.

The representatives of the ministries and companies related to the sectors of foreign trade, investments, science, IT, pharmaceuticals, textile, insurance, tourism, transport, food and construction materials industries participated in the meeting.

The first deputy minister of foreign economic relations, investments and trade of Uzbekistan, commission co-chairman N.Najimov said the relations between the two countries were developing successfully.

Uzbekistan and Latvia have created solid legal foundations of bilateral cooperation. The sides have signed cooperation agreements in various areas. The volume of mutual trade turnover last year made up USD 256.8 million.

In Uzbekistan, 20 companies set up with participation of Latvian investments are operating. They specialize in furniture, textile, confectionery production, oil processing, trade and service. Besides, 16 companies of Latvia have their representative offices in Uzbekistan.

The two states also closely cooperate in the field of transit transportation. Being located in the center of the Great Silk Road, Uzbekistan plays an important role for Latvia in the latter’s relations with the region.

“Uzbekistan is a country with a stably developing economy,” minister of transport of Latvia Kaspars Gerhards, the commission co-chairman, said. “Despite the world economic crisis, the economic relations between Uzbekistan and Latvia continue developing.”
