OREANDA-NEWS. October 29, 2009. Sevmash Sent the First Packaging UKH-109 Designed for Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel to the Leningrad Nuclear Power Station.

This is a new type of products approximately half as much as those that were previously manufactured at the enterprise. Diameter is 2.4 meters, height is about 4 meters and weigh is over 80 tons. Moreover for the first time set of capsules (144 units), in which fuel pins with spent fuel assemblies will be loaded into Nuclear Power Station, is included in cover of UKH-109. Specialists of Leningrad Nuclear Power Station plan to try applying process of fuel discharge by means of the manufactured packaging.

UKH-109 is certified for compliance with requirements of specifications and documents applied in nuclear power industry. At the present day 22 sets of UKH for nuclear power station are in production at Sevmash. Eight sets are next in turn. It is planned to sign a contract with the customer of the packaging sets OJSC “Energoatom Concern” for the next 36 sets. Taking into account the need of nuclear power stations in containers for spent nuclear fuel, Sevmash can be provided with additional work for several years.
