OREANDA-NEWS. October 16, 2009. The Transport Ministry of Belarus is interested in attracting investors to develop transport and logistical centers, Transport Minister Ivan Scherbo said during a transport congress.

“Most of Belarusian warehouses belong to C and D categories, and there is a shortage of A and B warehouses, which may be used for logistical operations. They require substantial investment, which we do not have now, and we are interested in having investors,” Scherbo said.

He also called for the creation of general use logistical centers, which would deal with export and import operations by smaller businesses. “Such centers, catering for smaller customers, could process about 30 million tonnes of freights per year,” Scherbo said.

The minister believes Belarus should use the potential of free economic zones in developing logistical centers.

“However, some of them do not have sufficient areas, which is why we suggest changing their borders,” Scherbo said.

In 2008, Belarus’ transit revenues amounted to USD 2.6 billion.
