U.S. Interested in Cooperation with Russia in Nuclear Technologies
OREANDA-NEWS. October 2, 2009. The United States is interested in cooperating with Russia in the field of nuclear power technologies, particularly, on projects to design fast and low and medium power reactors, a source from Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation told journalists on Thursday.
Recently, representatives of Rosatom and the US Department of Energy held negotiations on the prospects of their cooperation. The Americans showed interest in new reactors. They understand that the future of nuclear energy is fast and low and medium power reactors.
The source informed the journalists that Techsnabexport (100% subsidiary of Atomenergoprom) had made \\$3.5bln worth direct contracts with US power companies.
The source also said that during his visit to the United States Director General of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko visited the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where during the WWII the Americans produced uranium for the Manhattan project.
Kiriyenko also attended a meeting of the US-Russian nonproliferation working group.
