OREANDA-NEWS. September 07, 2009. According to press-service of I.Aliyev, Turkmen leader congratulated the head of Azerbaijani state and the people of Azerbaijan on sacred month Ramadan. President I.Aliyev  expressed his gratitude, delivered his congratulations on Ramadan to the head of Turkmenistan and Turkmen people.

They exchanged views on bilateral relations and a number of other issues of mutual interest.

The Presidents also underlined the two countries have wide potential for further strengthening of  mutual cooperation.

Relations between countries develop unsteadily. In 2008, Azerbaijan redeemed  old debt before Turkmenistan for gas supplies, the parties  conducted in Baku the first conference on oil and gas  cooperation  in the Caspian Sea.

However, in summer 2009, against the background of failure with delimitation  of the border Turkmenistan stated that would file a lawsuit to international arbitration over illegality of use of a number of fields by Azerbaijan in the Caspian Sea as well as made decision to strengthen naval forces. Azerbaijan did not wish to be at suit with the neighbor and stated on necessity of demilitarization of the Caspian.
