Moldovan President Praises Results Achieved in Last Eight Years
OREANDA-NEWS. On August 26, 2009 The social-economic achievements of the last eight years show that Moldova has good prospects, being recognized by 160 states worldwide, President Vladimir Voronin said at a cabinet meeting.
The head of state said that the main goals residing in the improvement of living standards were met in the last eight years. Thus, an eloquent index is the increase in the average life length from 59 to about 70 years. Demographic indexes increased as well and the rate of children s death decreased.
Voronin said that in this period a revolution took place in the health care sector, with the shift to the mandatory health care insurance having solved the daily problems of this sector. Moldova returned to primary medicine which provides quality services.
Important measures were taken in the sector of social assistance for aged people. Presently, about 180 centres for aged and lonely people operate in Moldova to provide them with the necessary social and medical services daily, while in early 2001 there were only four centres like this.
Education is another sector in which important measures were taken, with the emphasis being laid on quality studies. Presently, over 70 per cent of the state universities are financed from budgetary means
Voronin described as successful the implementation of the national programme of constructing gas supply pipelines. Thus, over 90 per cent of Moldova s settlements were connected to gas compared with seven per cent in 2001. He added that there are real chances that the programme be completed as scheduled on 30 December 2010.
The head of state also pointed out the importance to carry out the water supply programme, which is rather expensive but very important for maintaining the quality of life.
Voronin thanked the cabinet members for their active involvement in the implementation of social-economic programmes, stressing that their experience will be used in new projects of building a democratic and prosperous state.
Today, the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Zinaida Grecianii tabled its resignation.
