OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2009. The automobile industry in Uzbekistan is still young but its successful and effective performance is worth being proud of. For 13 years it has been irreproachably functioning and long-term result has been its priority. That makes our country be especially proud of it. We hope all readers would join our sincere congratulations assigned for the hero of the occasion. “GM Uzbekistan” is the factory that has knocked together professionals for whom their work means a lot.

17 years ago Uzbekistan’s economy experienced hardships and required considerable structural changes. The idea to establish our own full-scale cars’ manufacturing sounded unbelievable. In spite of skeptical attitude, necessary agreements were concluded and preliminary work was successfully completed. On July 19th, 1996 “Uz-Daewoo Auto” (nowadays “GM Uzbekistan” ), the car factory in Asaka, started the manufacturing production of “Nexia”, “Damas” and “Tiko”. For Uzbekistan it was a significant step. A new development stage was founded. The new promising branch was going to create incentives for intensive promotion of other spheres, for example, mechanical engineering, petrochemistry and electronics. Since 1999 “Uz-Daewoo Auto” meets the requirements of ISO 9001. It has enhanced the prestige of the factory, provided it with the quality of management and served as a “pass” to get to the foreign market.

The company works with Korean, Italian, Dutch and American partners. At the same time it tries to expand the share of car parts manufactured in the country. The implementation of localization projects is essential. It is important to realize its role for entities of small and medium-sized businesses and, moreover, it encourages entrepreneurial spirit and helps to create working places. At present time, more than eighty enterprises from all over the Republic provide the factory in Asaka with their production.

The competitors constantly stimulate the company to implement modern technologies, scientific and design developments. Besides, it is necessary to think about future: young experts must be educated, special colleges need to be built. It is important to take part in social projects, encourage intellectual potential of workers. The task is not easy but it can be done. For instance, a great attention is paid to improve specialists’ qualification. They go to South Korea, India, Germany, Japan, Czech Republic, and Poland to exchange experience with foreign experts at their enterprises. Also, in 2009 the Polytechnic University of Turin starts to educate future professionals, who, we hope, are going to leave visible tracks in the history of national Automobile Industry.

In the beginning of the third millennium “GM Uzbekistan” was able to introduce a range of modern car models: Damas, Nexia, Matiz, Lacetti, Chevrolet Epica and Chevrolet Captiva. In the end of 2008 a momentous event in the life of young ambitious company took place. The millionth car was demonstrated at a solemn ceremony. The share of Automobile Industry in the total volume of the Republic’s GNP made around 10 per cent. It is an excellent indicator that shows a great success of national automobile industry. Usually, such figures stimulate to set new purposes and reach them.History is not fond of speed, it prefers evolution. Nothing is reached immediately, everything requires work, efforts and persistence. It is the eternal law of the Universe.
