Rosatom to Develop Nuclear Power Systems of New Generation
OREANDA-NEWS. On August 10, 2009 The Government of the Russian Federation has instructed Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation to join the framework agreement for cooperation in the framework of the international program to develop nuclear power systems of the fourth generation allowing to lower the costs, to enhance nuclear safety, to reduce the production of nuclear waste and to minimize the risks of proliferation of weapons-grade materials . Russia has taken part in this project as an associate member since 2006, reported the press-centre of Minatom.
On July 30 2009 the Government named Rosatom as executor of the framework agreement on behalf of the Russian Federation. Rosatom has also been instructed to ensure participation in Generation IV international forum at its own expense.
Generation IV program is the initiative of the United States. In 1997 a group of science and technology advisor of the US President analyzed the state of the national research and development projects in the field of power engineering and drafted a plan of action to be taken in the field of power engineering and environment protection in XXI. The program – in the format of an international forum — involves the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Canada, China, South Korea and Brazil.
