Wartime Explosive Device Found at Vilnius International Airport
OREANDA-NEWS. August 10, 2009. An old wartime explosive device was found while laying electrical cables in the remote part of the Vilnius International Airport (VIA) on Wednesday. The device was brought off the territory of the airport for destruction. The security of flights and passengers was not threatened, reported the press-centre of Vilnius International Airport.
The bomb squad of the Gelezinis Vilkas brigade found out that it was an aviation bomb made from a wartime artillery shell. Although the bomb was without a detonator it still carried explosives and it was decided to bring it out of the airport for destruction.
‘The explosive device was found while excavating the ground in the remote area of the airport and it did not threaten flights and passengers. For it carried explosives the bomb squad decided to transport the devise out of the airport‘, said the Director of the Aviation Security of the airport, Juozas Zekas.
All the Vilnius city security and rescue services were informed about the incident. The territory, where the explosive device was found, was cordoned and guarded by the police. The Aviation Security Service and Fire and Rescue Service of VIA, as well as the officers of the police subdivision of the airport, were monitoring and controlling the situation.
The flights from and to the Vilnius airport were not suspended and were carried on according to the schedule.
