Russian Railways Cuts Impact on Environment
OREANDA-NEWS. August 04, 2009. Russian Railways is implementing an investment project "Promoting Environmental Safety 2009-2011." During the first half of 2009, the Company invested 54.1 million roubles in environmental activities and cut emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 20,000 tons (down 10%) compared to 2008 year, of effluent discharge by 10,300 tons (down 0.1%) and of waste by at 388,500 tons (down 29.5%), reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.
These reductions were due to the installation of equipment in 2008 under the investment project "Promoting Environmental Safety":
treatment facilities on the railways: Northern (Sharya and Inta locomotive depots), the North Caucasus (Krasnodar locomotive depot), Kuibyshev (Syzran locomotive depot), West Siberian (Altai locomotive depot);
sites for the temporary storage and removal of waste on Northern Railways (6 sites), and Sakhalin Railways (2 sites).
