University of Tartu Increases Number of International Applicants
OREANDA-NEWS. August 03, 2009. According to the information available on 15 July, 77 international applicants have been admitted to the international Master’s programmes of the University of Tartu. This represents a 100% increase on the previous year, reported the press-centre of University of Tartu.
The programme of semiotics, which in the coming autumn will be followed by 30 new entrants, was the most successful. The programme of Software Engineering, instituted in cooperation with the Tallinn University of Technology, admitted 22 international students. All in all, 99 applicants have been admitted to the university’s international programmes.
In the academic year about to begin, foreign students are offered six international Master’s programmes taught in English: Semiotics, Applied Measurement Science, Software Engineering, Baltic Studies, European Union – Russian Studies and Wellness and Spa Service Design and Management. Three of these – Semiotics, Software Engineering and Wellness and Spa Service Design and Management – represent new additions to English-language programmes offered by UT and open in 2009 for the first time.
The largest number of applications to UT’s international programmes was submitted by student candidates from the US, Russia, the Ukraine and Germany. The more exotic countries represented in the pool of 2009 applicants included, among others, Syria, Mexico, India, Columbia and Sri Lanka.
166 applications meeting the requirements were received from international candidates for admittance to UT’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral programmes. The total number of applications submitted by candidates abroad was 1184.
The final number of admitted applicants will be announced on 24 July, the closing date for applications to Bachelor’s programmes.
