Moldova Harvested over 90% of Farmland Sowed with Cereals
OREANDA-NEWS. July 29, 2009. Over 90 per cent of the farmland sowed with first-group cereals have been already harvested, so that the agricultural campaign will be completed by 1 August, the Agriculture and Food Ministry's press service has said.
Presently, the total volume of first-group cereals and rape is about one million tons, with the average productivity of all the crops being 21.6 quintals per hectare. The harvest of the winter barley was finished.
About 90 per cent of the 317,000 hectares of winter wheat were harvested. Good results were recorded in the districts of Donduseni, Briceni, Edinet and Falesti, where the harvest of wheat varied between 30 and 36 quintals per one ha.
About 800,000 tons of wheat is to be harvested in all, of which 80,000 tons will be seed materials. The food wheat will account for 40 per cent of all the harvest of wheat. The wheat harvest, though lower than in 2008, will ensure Moldova's food security.
In 2009, about 530,000 hectares are sowed with first-group crops and rape.
