Volume of Remittances Sent to Moldova Decreased by 33,1%
OREANDA-NEWS. July 20, 2009. According to the National Bank of Moldova, US 329.53 million (80.9% of the total remittances in January-May 2009) were sent through fast money transfer systems. In January-May 2008, this figure amounts to US 500.64 million (82.3%).
According to NBM, in January, 2009, the guest workers’ transfers to Moldova through the commercial banks made US 64.84 million, in February - US 70.42 million, in March - US 91.6 million, in April - US 90.19 million, in May - US 90.23 million.
About 55% of all transfers were sent in U.S. dollars, about 40% - in euros and 5% - in the Russian roubles. As it was informed before, in 2008 the volume of remittances to Moldova from individuals from abroad through commercial banks amounted to US 1 billion 660.06 million, increasing by 36.3% as compared with the previous year.
The volume of remittances from Moldovan labour migrants was steadily increasing till July 2008, but since August started to decline. The largest amounts of remittances are sent from Russia and Italy. According to the World Bank, the Moldovan guest workers transfers make up about one-third of the country's GDP.
