Transsiberian Re North-Western Bureau Paid USD 0.2 mln to SOGaz
OREANDA-NEWS. July 17, 2009. North-Western Bureau branch (Saint-Petersburg) of OJSC Transsiberian Reinsurance Corporation paid SOGaz insurance company (Moscow) 200 thousand USD of reinsurance indemnity in connection with engine damage of the vessel “Santa Marina” (type - refrigerator; year and place of built – 1978, Japan; displacement – 8833 BRT; flag and port of registration – Saint-Vincent and Grenadines, Kingston). Risk was accepted under obligatory marine reinsurance treaty.
While going in ballast from Saint-Petersburg to Argentine, on 23 April, 2007, 13:48 Moscow time, there was a signal in the engine room, showing high temperature of the main bearings. Despite the reduction of speed in the main engine, the temperature of bearings continued to rise. Safety valves were soon activated and the main engine automatically stopped.
At first, the vessel had to heave aback, and then she anchored. At that moment the vessel was 30 miles away from Tallinn (Estonia). The vessel was repaired in Tallinn shipyard. In particular, there were replaced bushing and piston of cylinder No. 3, bearing wedge, connecting rod and crankshaft.
Surveyors believe that the cause of the accident was incorrect assembly of cylinder piston group No. 3 during scheduled maintenance operations at the port of Saint-Petersburg.
Transsiberian Re share of loss made up 6.2mln rubles or 200 thousand USD (without reinstatement premium). After receipt of full loss portfolio on 1 July, 2009, North-Western Bureau branch of Transsiberian Re paid the reinsurance indemnity.
