As specified in Kazakhmys Group ("Kazakhmys" or "Group") annual report, in March 2009 Balkhash Zinc Plant operation was temporarily suspended. This measure has been undertaken because demand for the zinc concentrate is higher than for zinc. Zinc concentrate production is economically foe efficient in existing market conditions.

Kazakhmys leadership developed measures on training and employment of zinc production released employees. At present all employees are employed to other structural divisions of Balkhashtsvetmet Production Association.

"At present there are few good zinc production specialists, and we try our best to employ then on our enterprises. We have suspended the zinc plant in Balkhash - temporarily and from this spring we started development of draft proposal for the technology improvement and development of the zinc production reconstruction project with various scientific-research institutes", - commented Kazakhmys Corporation Board Chairman E. Ogai.
