SCM Participates in World Business Summit on Climate Change
OREANDA-NEWS. June 02, 2009. The World Business Summit on Climate Change was held on 24-26 May 2009 in Copenhagen (Denmark). The objective of the event is to seek for the ways to tackle two important challenges - care for the environment as well as safe and sustainable development of the global community.
Over 700 delegates took part in the Summit including representatives of the world business circles, government authorities, NGOs and top media companies. The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and the Prince Consort of Denmark Henrik were special guests of the Summit.
It's worth noting that the World Business Summit on Climate Change was held in advance of the UNO conference (COP15) in the framework of which political leaders of the UN member countries would meet in Copenhagen to discuss the Climate Change Agreement.
The Summit's delegates discussed the policy documents and investment projects which target to most effectively stimulate low-carbon economic growth. Solutions and recommendations developed in the course of the Summit were summarized in the Copenhagen Call - a broad statement aiming to provide a fresh vision from business and inspire governments negotiating the next international framework on climate change. The Summit's delegates believe this statement will send a signal to politicians that the economic crisis should not be seen as an excuse for inaction, but as a driver for fundamental changes. At the end of the Summit the Copenhagen Call was presented to Danish Prime Minister Lars Lшkke Rasmussen, the host of COP15.
Mr. Jock Mendoza-Wilson, SCM Director of International and Investor Relations, represented the company at the World Business Summit on Climate Change and commented on the event: "The issue of climate change is extremely important for Ukraine and the world. For SCM Group that includes mining and metal, steel and power businesses, environmental protection is an important priority issue on all levels. Therefore, we regularly invest in modernization of our production facilities in M&M and power sectors. The global economic crisis hasn't changed our attitude to environmental protection - we continue to invest in introduction of the latest environmentally-friendly technologies. We understand that environmental issues have direct impact on our performance as a business. Indeed efficient use of resources helps us work more effectively, and be stronger and more competitive internationally".
"The importance of the Summit can hardly be overstated: representatives of business and politics from all over the world have come here to confirm their intention to operate according to the rules that ensure economic growth and protect the environment as well as to develop correct and unified solutions that are important for our planet", added Mr Mendoza-Wilson.
