OREANDA-NEWS. On 28 May 2009 was announced, that Director General of “Sevmash” N. Kalistratov met chairman of Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation S. Stepashin.

In Severodvinsk S. Stepashin visited Belomorskaya naval base, rose up on the board of heavy atomic submarine cruiser ТК-20 “Severstal”. The future of this ship is doubtful: whether the rocket-carrier cruiser continues servicing or is subjected to be utilized.

In 1976-1989 6 heavy atomic submarine cruisers of strategic designation, project 941, were built on Sevmash. Ships of this class are considered to be the largest submarines in the world. However, three heavy cruisers have already been excluded from the fleet and utilized. Head ship of 208 series “Dmitriy Donskoy” was upgraded for testing the new rocket complex, ships 17 “Arkhangelsk” and 20 “Severstal” were taken out till conclusion concerning their future is made.

Director General of the enterprise N. Kalistratov considers that the resource of these unique submarines is not expired. S. Stepashin supported the initiative of Sevmash shipbuilders to save the heavy atomic submarine cruisers of 941 project.
