Vakaru Laivu Statykla Subsidiaries Load 3,000-ton Platform onto Barge
OREANDA-NEWS. May 15, 2009. Vakaru Laivu Statykla (Western Shipyard, or VLS) and Vakaru Krova (Western Handling), the subsidiaries of Lithuania's Vakaru Laivu Gamykla (Western Shipbuilding Plant, or VLG), have loaded a 3,000-ton residential and energy transformation platform built by VLS onto a barge.
Electricity generated at a wind-power park based in the North Sea will be transmitted to the platform where the alternating current will be transformed into direct current and transmitted to the electricity system of E.ON Netz, said VLG in a statement to BC.
"We are ready to handle even larger pieces of cargo at the port of Klaipeda. We hope to use this experience in future when offering our services to the builders of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, other owners of large pieces of cargo in Lithuania and abroad, logistics companies," the statement quoted Vakaru Krova CEO Nerijus Gricius as saying.
The platform will be shipped to Ireland, where it will be affixed to the supportive structure, in coming weeks. An agreement on the construction of the platform for the wind power park Bard Offshore 1 was signed on Jan. 20, 2008.
