Eesti Pank to Celebrate Its 90th Anniversary in May
OREANDA-NEWS. May 07, 2009. In May Eesti Pank will celebrate its birthday by various lectures on the tasks of the central bank, excursions of the premises of Eesti Pank and a special exhibition "Eesti Pank 90: the First Decade" to be opened at the Eesti Pank Museum, reported the press-centre of Eesti Pank.
Eesti Pank was established in 1919 by the Temporary Government's decision of 24 February. The central bank of the Republic of Estonia started regular operation on 3 May 90 years ago, when the government transferred 10 million marks from the state treasury to serve as the bank's fixed assets. The special exhibition "Eesti Pank 90: the First Decade" to be opened at the Eesti Pank Museum (Estonia pst 11) on Wednesday, 6 May, will provide an overview of the starting years of Estonia's central bank.
In addition, everybody is welcome to excursions of Eesti Pank organised in May every Wednesday and Thursday at 13.00. On Fridays, also starting at 13.00, lectures will be held on the tasks of the central bank. The topic of the first lecture, due on 8 May, is maintaining financial stability. On the next three Fridays, the lecture subjects are arranging cash circulation, managing the reserves backing the Estonian kroon and ensuring the functioning of settlement systems in Estonia, respectively. One lecture lasts approximately 30 minutes and is followed by an excursion of the buildings of Eesti Pank.
Furthermore - every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in May, from 12.00-17.00, everyone is welcome to visit the dome gallery of Eesti Pank's main building, where until 15 May it is possible to see an exhibition of Kaido Ole's paintings and starting from 20 May Siim-Tanel Annus' money-themed exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Eesti Pank.
Another series of events dedicated to the central bank's birthday is opening commemorative plaques of Eesti Pank's former department buildings in nine Estonian towns. The plaques are presented by Governor of Eesti Pank Andres Lipstok and Deputy Governors Rein Minka and Marten Ross. In addition, the Governor and Deputy Governors also hold a lecture in each of these towns on the Estonian economic situation and the prospects of joining the euro area. On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, plaques will be opened in Kuressaare, Parnu and Viljandi. In April, commemorative plaques were opened in Tartu, Valga, Voru, Paide, Rakvere and Haapsalu.
