OREANDA-NEWS. April 23, 2009. In 2010 Rosatom will start building a nuclear icebreaker of new generation, Director General of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation Sergey Kiriyenko said at the opening of the public forum dialogue “Nuclear Energy, Society, Security” in St. Petersburg.

In Q2 2009 the “Iceberg” Central Design Bureau is supposed to submit draft of this project. The cost of the construction will be determined later.

“We are planning to announce a tender but, since all of our icebreakers have been built by Baltiysky Zavod, this company has big chances to get this contract,” Kiriyenko said.

The federal target program for the development of the transport ship building industry has earmarked 17bln RUR for the construction of the main ship. The series may consist of five icebreakers.

“After 2015–2016 we will start decommissioning our icebreakers and will have just one modern icebreaker left — “50 Years of Victory,”” Kiriyenko said.
