German Chain Lidl Is Interested in Ukrainian Market
OREANDA-NEWS. On 10 April 2009 was announced, that German chain Lidl is interested in Ukrainian market. Lidl is currently negating JV with Group of companies “Karavan”.
“Previous year we planned o start development of a new format – discounters. Lidl at that time was interested in Ukraine and we offered cooperation”, - said Head of expansion of “Karavan” Aleksandr Makarenko. According to his words, currently form of cooperation is being discussed.
Makarenko said, that investments into opening of a one store of 1,000 sqm (800sqm GLA, 50-100 parking spaces) are estimated at USD1M.
Source in Lidl stated, that 3 years ago company already purchased 2 plots in Zaporozhye and Zhytomir. “But because of unknown reasons company postponed entering Ukraine and plots were sold” – said source. He also added that “Kaufland” (together with Lidl are members of Schwarz Group) was considering purchasing of “Amstor” hypermarkets.
Group of companies “Karavan” has already experience in bringing investors to the company. In 2007 20% shares of “Karavan Real Estate Limited” were sold for USD155M to Citigroup. Moreover, in summer 2008 company was negotiating selling of 50+1% shares to French chain Carrefour.
